New York Times bestselling author Denise Kiernan appears as part of the North Platte Town Hall Lecture Series on Wednesday, April 14, 2027, and will be presenting her book, The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II. At the height of World War II, thousands of young women — many fresh out of high school — were recruited to work in a secret Tennessee city that appeared on no map: Oak Ridge. They were not permitted to understand the details of what they were doing. At the end of the war, after bombs detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these women learned that they were helping to enrich uranium for the world's first atomic bomb. Drawing on years of research and interviews with the women themselves, Kiernan brings this extraordinary story of secrecy, sacrifice, and everyday courage to life.
